The Center for Health Research Hawaii
CHR Hawaii (CHR-H) focuses on topics suited to its environment within the health-care system of Kaiser Permanente Hawaii (KPH). CHR-H investigators study the demographics, health, and health care utilization of 230,000 health plan members in Hawaii. This membership is one of the most demographically diverse populations in the world. It enables TCHR to conduct research in a geographical area with large ethnic populations–Native
Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders–that also suffer disproportionately from several
chronic diseases, primarily diabetes and heart disease.
CHR-H conducts professionally autonomous research in the public domain. In other
words, the research is funded through grants and contracts from the federal government and foundations. Results are presented to fellow researchers and published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. CHR-H also supports clinical research carried out by KPH clinicians.
We believe in collaborative research as a way to advance knowledge to improve health of diverse populations. We have many partners and work in many venues locally, nationally, and internationally. We also train health researchers and help develop health programs and policy suited to the local community.
