Jeffrey L. Fellows, PhD is a health economist and CHR Investigator
with extensive experience assessing the disease burden of tobacco and
evaluating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of tobacco control
interventions. His research seeks to quantify the health and economic
consequences of tobacco use and develop innovative methods for promoting
cessation. Dr. Fellow's research also seeks to analyze the cost-effectiveness
of various interventions in as divergent fields as domestic abuse shelters,
dental research, and web-based smoking cessation programs.
Dr. Fellows was the principal investigator on a project to estimate the return
on investment to smoking cessation for health plans and employers, including
development of the "Business Case for Smoking Cessation" website and "Return On
Investment Calculator." He is the clinical site Principal Investigator for the
Dental Practice-Based Research Network, and has served as Co-Investigator on
three randomized trials assessing the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of
smoking cessation interventions. Dr. Fellows was a contributing author to the
2004 Surgeon General's Report The Health Consequences of Smoking.
Dr. Fellows holds a PhD in economics from the University of Utah. Before joining
the Center for Health Research, Dr. Fellows served as a Health Economist in the
CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. Dr.
Fellows also served as an Adjunct Economics Instructor in the Department of
Economics at both Portland State University and Lewis & Clark College. Dr.
Fellows currently serves as a Member of Washington State's Tobacco Prevention
& Control Expert Evaluation Advisory Committee, and regularly serves as a
consultant to other state tobacco control programs.
