Eric Johnson, PhD, is an epidemiologist who specializes in using healthcare databases to study the natural progression of disease. Most of his current work concerns the outcomes of patients with chronic kidney disease or diabetes. For example, he is a co-investigator on several studies that are developing algorithms to predict the onset of dialysis among patients with chronic kidney disease.
For the past 12 years, Dr. Johnson has conducted natural history studies that inform the design of randomized controlled trials sponsored by the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. He also studies drug safety and risk management. Dr. Johnson is a consultant to the Food and Drug Administration’s Advisory Committee on Drug Safety and Risk Management.
Dr. Johnson works with the Scientific Resource Center that is part of TCHR’s
Evidenced-based Practice Center, which is supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. One of the Scientific Resource Center’s responsibilities is advising on the DEcIDE (Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions about Effectiveness) Network of epidemiologic database studies; Dr. Johnson serves as the scientific lead for DEcIDE studies at the Scientific Resource Center.
Before joining TCHR, Dr. Johnson was on the faculty in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Washington where he taught pharmacoepidemiology. He has served on the affiliate faculty since 2003 and continues to co-teach a graduate course in the Departments of Epidemiology and Pharmacy.
