David H. Smith PhD, Senior Investigator
Dr. Smith's research focuses on the economic evaluation of medical interventions and pharmacoepidemiology. He is site principal investigator for the HMO CERTS (Centers for Research & Education on Therapeutics), an AHRQ-funded collaboration of HMOs focusing on pharmacy issues. Dr. Smith is involved in studies analyzing prescribing behavior, medication adherence, drug use and outcomes, and FDA-funded studies on drug safety.

Dr. Smith is conducting other pharmacy related research involving patient safety, including methods to reduce errors through alerting systems in automated physician prescribing. He is currently leading several industry-funded studies on the natural history of chronic kidney disease. He is also leading an Robert Wood Johnson-funded investigation into financial incentives in the treatment of depression in the primary care setting.

Dr. Smith received his pharmacy degree from the University of Washington in 1990. After completing his residency in General/Clinical Pharmacy he worked as a clinical pharmacist in home care. He received an MHA in Health Services Administration in 1995, and was awarded a PhD in Pharmacy Outcomes Research from the University of Washington in 1998. He is an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of York, Centre for Health Economics, and is adjunct assistant professor at the University of Washington's School of Pharmacy.
