What is PREMIER and why is it important?

WHAT LIFESTYLE CHANGES REDUCE BLOOD PRESSURE? Eating less salt, losing weight, drinking less alcohol, exercising more and eating an overall healthy diet (the DASH diet). PREMIER—studying innovative ways to reduce blood pressure and control hypertension without medication.

PREMIER is a new research program that studies the effects of a healthy diet and exercise on blood pressure. Research has shown that weight loss, exercise, and a healthy diet can each reduce blood pressure and control hypertension without medication. Together, they may have a dramatic effect.

  • The goal of PREMIER is to compare three programs that could reduce blood pressure through multiple lifestyle changes.
  • The potential benefits of participating in long term lifestyle change programs like PREMIER include improved nutrition and increased exercise; a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer; and help in controlling or reducing weight.
PREMIER is being conducted at 4 centers across the US:
Center for Health Research
Portland, OR
Duke University Medical Center
Durham, NC
Johns Hopkins
ProHealth
Woodlawn, MD
Pennington Biomedical Research Center Clinic
Baton Rouge, LA

PREMIER, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, is a new research program studying the effects of lifestye changes on blood pressure.
