Making Sure in Cardiac Care: An ethnographic investigation of the patient’s transition from emergency department to ICU

Brian Hazlehurst, Principal Investigator

This qualitative study drew on theory and methodology from cognitive science and anthropology to study cardiac care within Kaiser Permanente Northwest. This research described cardiac care delivery processes, capturing the cognitive and cultural bases of “making sure” that are evidenced in care delivery. Such descriptions can generate understanding about the relationship between work situations and the safety and efficacy of cardiac care delivery. This understanding can be used to design improvements to care processes, as well as to improve designs for technology and other support elements to care.
