Using Radon Risk to Motivate Smoking Reduction— RADON

Mark C. Hornbrook, Principal Investigator
Jeffrey L. Fellows Co-Investigator

We are helping to develop a smoking cessation program that capitalizes on the free radon testing offered by local utilities to inform smokers about the interactive carcinogenic risks of exposure to radon and tobacco smoke, and to conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis of the three active interventions—phone counseling only, video only, and phone counseling plus video. We are analyzing which intervention strategy offers the greatest number of quits and "life years" saved from a societal perspective. Our participation in this study is through a subcontract with the Oregon Research Institute.
