This study examined the relationship between levels of alcohol consumption and health care utilization and costs among primary care patients in Kaiser Permanente Northwest (KPNW). The study used data on 8,000 patients obtained from an AUDIT questionnaire in a previous Center for Health Research study, which also collected data on smoking status and sociodemographic characteristics. AUDIT was developed by the World Health Organization to identify hazardous drinking levels. Utilization data were obtained from KPNW administrative and clinical databases.
