Severely Mentally Ill HMO Members
Bentson H. McFarland,
Principal Investigator;
Mark C. Hornbrook,
Richard E. Johnson, CHR Investigators
This project was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and builds on an earlier study (1990-1994) that identified 250 severely mentally ill HMO members to prospectively study their use of medical care services and their enrollment patterns over a five-year period. The study found, as expected, that these members used more services than age/sex-matched controls, and--unexpectedly--that they maintained their HMO membership longer than controls. This study calculated the costs of providing services to these members, examined their use of public mental health services, and compared these severely mentally ill members with physically ill members. The study also compared the severely mentally ill members who maintain HMO enrollment with those who left the HMO.
