Depression is one of the most common mental disorders among children and adolescents, affecting as many as 25% of adolescents by age 18. Little information exists regarding the services for youth depression in typical health care settings, particularly managed care. This study will examine antidepressant treatment in a general adolescent population (ages 12 to 18) in Kaiser Permanente Northwest. Specifically, this study will examine whether outcomes are better for depressed children receiving "adequate" antidepressant drug treatment. The study also will analyze factors that may affect how well antidepressant drug treatment works. The project is focused on drug therapy but also will study other treatment services received by these youth. Information will be collected through electronic medical records and interviews of the youth and parents.
