Surveillance for Incident Cases of Asthma: Implementing Population-Based Models in HMOs—PASS 2

Mary Ann McBurnie, Principal Investigator
Brian Hazlehurst, William M. Vollmer, Co-Investigator

This study will develop an asthma surveillance system using administrative databases to identify incident asthma cases in members aged 2-65 years. Prevalent asthma cases will be identified for a four-year period. New asthma cases will be identified for six subsequent years. These new cases will be described through chart review. All identified participants will be mailed a questionnaire. The questionnaire will include questions about symptoms, past diagnoses, age at asthma onset, smoking history, asthma control, activity limitation, and asthma-related quality of life. We will estimate the approximate health care costs for identified patients.
