Development of an HMO Disability Registry Using Automated Data Systems — Disability ID

Mark C. Hornbrook, Principal Investigator
Kathleen K. Brody, Co-Investigator

This project will develop a computerized algorithm to identify HMO members with sensory, cognitive, emotional, physical, or mobility impairments, using “typical” HMO administrative databases. The project will use a functional health status survey to test and validate the algorithm, including assessing the extent of double-counting due to patients having more than one impairment. This project also will test the model by comparing persons identified in 1998 as disabled with their current clinical diagnosis in 2001.
