Njeri Karanja, John Pearson, Frances L. Lynch, Nancy A. Perrin, Co-Investigators

This lifestyle intervention study is tailored for gender and developmental stage and includes a behavioral intervention for teens, their parents, and their primary care providers. This study targets 14- to 17-year-old girls who have been identified as overweight at a primary care visit. These participants are randomly assigned to a control or intervention group for one year. The intervention consists of 20 contacts, including group meetings for adolescents and parents (separately), telephone sessions, and follow-up appointments with the teen’s primary care provider. In addition to examining the intervention’s effect on body mass index, this study is also examining the psychological and social effects of obesity.
