Measurement of Family Cost of Children’s Mental Illness

Frances L. Lynch, Principal Investigator
Nancy H. Vuckovic, Lynn L. DeBar, Christina Gullion, Maureen O'Keeffe-Rosetti Co-Investigators

While recent research has shown that children’s mental health issues can be a financial burden on their families, instruments used to measure this burden do not include quantitative cost estimates. For this study, cost is defined as 1) monetary expenditures, 2) family time dedicated to treatment, and 3) employment changes resulting from treatment. This study is developing an instrument that will measure the costs associated with child mental health issues. This instrument will combine qualitative and quantitative methods to develop and test the feasibility and acceptability of this new instrument. Data from this study will inform a larger-scale study that will enable us to estimate costs for each mental condition, improve cost-effectiveness of interventions, and analyze financial policies affecting children with mental health conditions.
