Oregon Community Health Information Network
Mary L. Durham,
Principal Investigator
The Oregon Community Health Information Network (OCHIN) is a non-profit collaboration of public and private health systems in Oregon. OCHIN's mission is to improve access to care and quality of care for vulnerable Oregonians served by Community Health Centers and other health clinics serving vulnerable populations. This network is developing a common practice management system and Electronic Medical Record to meet the unique needs of Federally Qualified Health Centers and other community health centers caring for indigent, uninsured, and underinsured populations. This project is also developing an infrastructure to support research within these communities. OCHIN is a collaboration of health care organizations to supply community health centers with needed research initiatives, including project management staff to oversee research relationships, develop contracts, ensure project implementation and completion, and address legal and ethical requirements. The funding also enables collaborative development of a three-tiered OCHIN website to serve: the public by providing information about OCHIN and its partners; OCHIN and its partners by providing a private website for communication, organization, training, etc.; and OCHIN researchers by providing each study with a secure website for research-related communications. OCHIN’s 14 community-based partners operate over 50 clinics in Oregon. Since its inception, OCHIN has commenced several research projects, including: a descriptive study to assess maternal and child health at local community clinics; a CareOregon study examining health status and health related quality of life at community hospitals serving disparate populations; and a Latino Child Obesity Study that is developing, implementing, and evaluating a culturally appropriate obesity prevention intervention among a population of Latino children.
