Cancer Outcomes Research and Surveillance—CanCORS

Mark C. Hornbrook, Principal Investigator
Thomas M. Vogt, Co-Investigator

This study is taking place at five clinical sites of the HMO Cancer Research Network: Kaiser Permanente Northwest (KPNW), Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound, Henry Ford Health System, and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. The Center for Health Research will identify incident cases of lung cancer (n=2,058) and colorectal cancer (n=1,732) among KPNW members during a 24-month window; collect data from patients' automated medical records; administer two waves of the CanCORS patient survey to patients in the study; and administer a survey of KPNW physicians (oncologists and primary care physicians) caring for study patients. The study will over-sample African-Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Medicaid recipients. In addition, the study will collect comprehensive data on a cohort of patients with newly diagnosed metastatic recurrences of colorectal cancer during the two-year enrollment period (about 300 patients). The CHR also will host and maintain the CRN CanCORS Web site to enable communication and coordination among the investigators and project staff and will collect data on utilization and cost analysis for lung and colorectal cancers.
