Research is a way for scientists and others to study and understand things better. SUPPORT is a research study on ways to prevent self-harm, improve safety, and increase well-being in teenagers.
Who can take part?
This study is for teens between the ages of 13 and 17 who get their health care from Kaiser Permanente Northwest, Kaiser Permanente Washington, Kaiser Permanente Georgia, or HealthPartners in Minnesota. Researchers at these places used a computer program to search health records to find people who might be at increased risk of harming themselves and sent them an invitation in the mail. If you received an invitation and would like to take part, you can let us know by calling us. Parents (or guardians) of teens also must agree that the teen can participate.
Reasons to take part
SUPPORT offers services for young people who might be at risk for self-harm, at no cost
If you decide to participate in the study services, you will be connected with a study Care Manager who will talk with you about your mental health, ask about your risk of self-harm, and work with you to develop a safety plan. Some teens are also invited to join online group sessions that teach skills to help change behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that cause pain or stress. The services we provide as part of this study are in addition to your regular care. They are not meant to replace any care or services you already get, and you can still see your regular providers. Study services will last for 6-8 months. The exact length of time will depend on the services you get.
All study activities can be done from home, by phone or video call
You do not have to travel anywhere to participate. Care Managers will connect with you over phone, video call, text, and email.
The study services may improve your well-being
You may or may not be helped by being in this study. We cannot promise that you will benefit.
It's private
The people working on this study have many years of experience in health research and work within well-known health care systems. No one on the study will ever sell, rent, or lease your information. Everything you tell us is private and used only for the study.
It makes a difference
Most of what we know about how to best help people comes from studies like this one. Be a part of something big: What we learn in this study may help other teens in the future.
