What to expect

Infographic that shows what participants can expect participating in the Resolve study

If you’re interested in joining the RESOLVE study, the first step is to answer questions to find out if you are eligible. Complete a brief survey online or call your study site.

If you are eligible and decide to join the study, we will ask you to do these things:

  1. Complete a baseline survey (survey #1)
    • You can choose to complete it over the phone or online.
    • The survey will ask questions about your pain and how it affects your life. Some of the questions are on sensitive topics, such as questions about emotions or medications, but you can skip any question you do not want to answer.
  2. Be randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups
    • You will have an equal chance of being assigned to any 1 of these 3 groups but you can’t choose which one you are in.
      • Group 1 will receive a printed resource guide to chronic pain management.
      • Group 2 will attend 8 online sessions that teach Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) pain-coping skills.
      • Group 3 will attend 8 phone or video conference sessions that teach CBT pain-coping skills with a live health coach.
  3. Complete a brief paper survey (survey #2)
    • It will be mailed to you with a packet telling you which group you are in and can be sent back in the pre-paid envelope provided.
  4. Complete three follow-up surveys (survey #3, #4 and #5)
    • You will receive the surveys about 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after you join the study.
    • Like the baseline survey, these surveys ask questions about your pain and how it affects your life. Some of the questions are on sensitive topics but you can skip any question you do not want to answer.
  5. Let us collect some information from your medical record
    • This helps us understand how well the program works and the costs of health care services you use.
    • We will not put your survey answers or any other study information into your medical record.

Some people who join may also be interviewed about their experience with pain services and in the study.

Each survey will take about 30 minutes. You can do them online, by phone, or by mail.

The surveys will ask about your pain and how it affects your life. Some of the questions are on sensitive topics such as mental health and substance use. You don’t have to answer any question you don’t want to. We will not share your answers with your doctor or anyone else. The information we collect in the surveys will not go in your medical record.

You will receive Amazon gift cards to thank you for surveys and interviews you complete. These are the amounts you can receive.

  • Baseline survey: $25
  • 3-month survey: $30 if done by phone or paper; $35 if done online
  • 6-month survey: $35 if done by phone or paper; $40 if done online
  • 12-month survey: $40 if done by phone or paper; $45 if done online
  • Interviews: $30 per interview (up to two interviews)

If you join the study, we will collect information from your medical record about the health services you use. This includes things like doctor visits and medications. We will also collect general information about you, including your age, ethnic background, and health conditions, including behavioral health or substance use disorders. We will not collect any information from the notes your doctor writes in your medical record.

No one on our research team will directly look at your medical record to collect this information. Instead, we will use a computer that will label your information with a code number only. We will keep all this information confidential and use it for research purposes only.

By being in this study, you may learn new ways to help you better manage chronic pain. Also, your participation may help other people who have chronic pain. What we learn will be shared with health care providers and national organizations who are interested in improving pain treatments.

No names or identifying information will ever be used in reports about this study. But we will report what we learn about people who were in each group overall.

If you decide not to participate, that’s fine too. Your choice to not participate will not impact the health care or insurance you receive.
